It was another weekend, another NSSA final round, for Westcliff star surfer Silke Martinez last Saturday and Sunday in Santa Cruz. “Silke destroyed the quarters and semifinals, both with big scores, to make her third NSSA final,” Westcliff assistant coach Chelsea Ehlen said. “She faced a stacked heat and would have finished higher with better waves. But we are very happy with the result.” Martinez finished third overall in the women’s competition, just 6.78 points from the win.

Westcliff’s Spanish surfing sensation, freshman Silke Martinez, called them the worst conditions in which she’d ever surfed a contest. Huntington Beach was tidal, windy, swell-less mess over the weekend for the NSSA’s Southwestern Conference contest, and it brought major headaches — especially for the Warriors’ men’s teams — as Westcliff finished a disappointing fourth overall.  But for Martinez, who has been a heavy-hitter for the Warriors since stepping off the plane from Spain and taking second overall at Black’s in La Jolla, Surf City USA was just another beach to tame, and she did just that, making history as Westcliff’s first-ever female NSSA first-place finisher.

Heading into the 2021-22 season, Westcliff Surf head coach Kyle Rouse and assistant coach Chelsea Ehlan weren’t quite sure what to expect. It was Westcliff’s first full season of NSSA competition, the team was full of fresh faces and the road was wide open, come what may. Turns out the Warriors would end their journey the No. 5 team in America.

Westcliff Surf in their official 1st season as a sport here at Westcliff University. They are already make big waves across the surf scene on the west coast. Coach Rouse along with a talented group of surfers have been competing at the highest level. A few surfers that have been making Westcliff's name known across the state are Jack Hopkins, Ninon Mattei, Bryce Mattox and Blaze Roche. As a group the rest of the Surfers at Westcliff (Robert Crist, Cole Futak, Sierra Lim, Ian Livesay and Jake Shiroke) in every competition this season so far have made it to the next round and even to the next rounds the following day. We have had some high finishes with Mattox and Mattei finishing as high as 11th out of 100+ surfers.

It was a pleasant Sunday at Huntington Beach, great for sunning, not so great for surfing. The waves were in short supply on the final day of the NSSA Huntington Beach Conference Open, but that didn’t stop a couple of Warriors from pushing through and showing out. Both Jack Hopkins on the men’s side, and Ninon Mattei on the women’s, finished 11th overall after clawing through semifinal rounds that featured very few waves powerful enough to get up, much less ride.

Westcliff Surf had a resoundingly successful Day 1 in Huntington Beach Saturday at the NSSA Conference Open. The men’s team took center stage and pushed four surfers through to the championship qualifying rounds. Jack Hopkins and Bryce Mattox then made it through to the championship rounds on Sunday. They will begin surfing at approximately 9 a.m.
